Area programmes are programmes working beyond National borders where necessary, which are self-managed and combining practical activities with research / critical analysis and social action and seeking changes in particular geographic area.

Area Programs are defined by a shared/common problem, informed by social exclusion analysis. It is about common analysis that leads to a common issue and, thereby, a common response. The analysis is done in relation to local, national, and international processes that lead to exclusion.

The response by an area programme should address both the consequences and the roots of the problems at critical levels. It is a potential for addressing the problem through common action, and convergence in changing the situation (seeks to work with others).

An area programme is issues -based. It is the common issue, which determines the geographical coverage/location. It is a geographically defined thematic programme, i.e. site for practical interventions informed by theme (as well as facilitated by social action)..

ACORD's Area programmes work beyond national borders where necessary, which are self-managed and combining practical activities with research / critical analysis and social action and seeking changes in particular geographic area.

ACORD has 13 Areas Programmes spread across Africa: That is; ANGOLA, Burundi, DRC, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Lake Victoria, Mozambique, North Sudan, Southern  Sudan,  Uganda, Rwanda, Sahel1, Sahel2.

An area programme combines practical activities with social action and must have clear policy and practices changes (PPC), defined by the issues at their geographic proximity. An area program has a clear strategic direction, strategic leadership, and an approved strategy document in consistence with the vision, mission and values of the organisation. Its intervention (projects, activities) contributes to the achievement of the goal of ACORD.

It is assessable also by its ability to deliver/catalyse social action. It must have enough resources (staffing, resources, systems, ways of working) to deliver its agenda. It generates inputs (information, lessons, expertise) for thematic social action at levels beyond its geographical coverage. Area programmes is where the issue is generated, processed, analysed and networked for profiling through social action

These area programmes thus form the practical and geographic basis for ACORD’s activity in Africa cover 20 countries.

For the moment, ACORD has a number of 13 areas programmes that are:

ANGOLA, Burundi, DRC, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Lake Victoria, Mozambique, North Sudan, Southern  Sudan,  Uganda, Rwanda, Sahel1, Sahel2.
