BOTSWANA: Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS
ACORD Botswana is currently mainstreaming
HIV/AIDS in its programming in Ngamiland. The main lessons learnt so
far are the importance of being aware of and addressing cultural
issues in HIV/AIDS awareness and the importance
of using peer group facilitators. The programme is currently taking a
number of steps in developing this aspect of its programming. These
are listed below to assist other NGOs working on similar issues and to
allow others to provide advise.
Steps:
1. Decide on priorities and strategies and seek funding
2. Approach other stakeholders i.e. government, other NGOs, DMSAC and
seek their input on their plans
3. Approach traditional leaders, village development committees,
traditional healers, etc
4. Support villages in setting up village AIDS committees
5. Support communities to identify members to facilitate AIDS
awareness in their villages. The members are trained in HIV/AIDS and
participative training methodologies.
6. Design and support community facilitators in delivering awareness
raising training in their own communities.
7. Seek out videos in Setswana and other languages.
8. Work with local groups to develop drama initiatives
