Programme Operation Context

Sudan is the largest African country with an area of 2.5 million Km2 and is characterized by its diverse natural and socio-cultural environment. Sudan is the home of 31.7 million multi ethnic groups.

The civil war in Sudan has been dividing and segmenting the Sudanese peoples since the dawn of independence in 1956 imposing an extra burden on the national budget and posed a serious disruption in human, social, political and economic structures/resources of the country.

Northern Sudan  Programme, Manager Asha El Karib

It is estimated that 1.5 million civilians were killed since 1983 in civil war in South Sudan. War has created the “largest number of refugees to neighboring countries and internal displaced persons.

Notable progress and positive turn has been made in negotiating peace between the government of Sudan and the SPLM/A since 2002 and reached final agreement to put an end to the longest civil war in Africa indicating a six-year interim period “during which South Sudan will enjoy autonomous governance” to be followed as the agreement indicates by a referendum to let the people of South Sudan decide whether to continue as part of Sudan or secede.

In spite of the ongoing peace process between Sudan government and SPLA/M to solve peacefully the 20 years of civil war a new conflict broke out in Darfur.

Since the intensification of war about 1.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to the armed conflict. About 200,000 took refuge in neighboring Chad, which borders Darfur province, to escape systematic killing and other human rights violations committed by the government and pro government militia (Janjaweed).

Formal training is also provided to specifically develop civil society capacity in managerial and organizational areas together with their participation in thematic areas of the program. 420 men and women community leaders attended training workshops in a range of issues including strategic thinking, leadership training, literacy etc. to improve relevant skills

Yet Civil Society still rates as weak in relation to challenges of upholding social justice and human rights issues. However, with peace and freedom they will be shaping themselves in solidarity. This in turn shall be ACORD’s challenge to promote advocacy, lobbing strategies and to net work and empower Sudanese civil societies and other community groups.
