Programme Operation Context

The Lake Victoria Area Programme covers NW Tanzania and South Western Uganda. The program covers 6 Districts ( Biharamulo, Karagwe, Mwanaz, Geita, Bukoba, and Ngorongoro in Tanzania and Mbarara District in Uganda.

The program aim is to contribute to building capacity of marginalized people living around Lake Victoria through strengthening the realization of their basic rights and achieve basic needs in a sustainable manner.

Lake Victoria Programme, Manager Donald Kasongi

In area of sustainable livelihoods ACORD is promoting increased access to affordable water, sanitation and natural resources. Specific interventions include water sanitation and hygiene in Mwanza which contributed to increased participation of communities in planning for reduction of water related diseases in urban and peri-urban. Increased access to micro finance services, particularly to women and youth, led to improved gender relations in communities at household level.

The change of focus on HIV/AIDS interventions moved from activities on prevention, mitigation and care to mainstreaming and networking broadened ACORD’s engagement at local and national levels. The program played key role in preparation of case study on mainstreaming on HIV/AIDS.

The programming facilitates linkages and net working between the district local CBOS and NGOs to national policy forum.  The program has recently completed the document and secured funding to start HIV/AIDS intervention in Ngorongoro, in the remote and marginalized pastoralist area in the country.
